Lip Blushing: How to Prepare to Avoid Cold Sores and Swelling
Perfect lips don’t start with the artist’s first stroke; they begin with the right preparation at home. Lip Blushing(Permanent Makeup) is a delicate procedure, but for the body, it is a form of micro-trauma that can trigger a protective response. At Tattooed, we have prepared this honest guide to help you minimize risks and achieve a clean, even, and vibrant color.
The Big Question: Why Do Cold Sores Appear?
It is important to understand: PMU does not “carry” or “infect” you with the herpes virus. The virus already lives in a dormant state within the systems of most people. The micro-stimulation of the needle irritates the nerve endings, which can “wake up” the virus. If a breakout occurs during the healing phase, the pigment simply won’t take in that area, leaving gaps and uneven spots.
How we prevent this: We strongly recommend consulting with your doctor 2–3 days before your procedure about taking preventive anti-viral medication (such as Acyclovir). This is a standard global practice that ensures smooth healing in 95% of cases.
One Week Before: Hydration is the Priority
Pigment settles perfectly only on soft, healthy skin. If your lips are dry or chapped, the color retention will be uneven.
Daily Care: Start intensely hydrating your lips with high-quality balms.
Exfoliation: 3 days before your appointment at Tattooed, perform a gentle lip scrub (honey and sugar or a mild cosmetic exfoliant). This removes dead skin cells, allowing the needle to glide smoothly.
Procedure Stop: No filler injections (lip augmentations) for at least one month before your PMU session.
24 Hours Before: A Clean System
To minimize swelling and prevent excess plasma (which washes out the pigment), follow these rules:
-
No Alcohol: It thins the blood and triggers significant swelling.
-
Limit Caffeine: Caffeine raises blood pressure, making the procedure more “active,” which can reduce pigment efficiency.
-
Medication: Avoid aspirin or other blood-thinning medications unless medically necessary.
What to Expect Immediately After?
Swelling after a lip procedure is a completely natural reaction. It often looks like an “enhanced lip” effect and usually subsides within 2–5 hours, occasionally lasting until the next morning.
Tattooed Recommendation: On the first evening, you can use a dry cold compress (wrapped in a sterile cloth). This quickly calms the skin and reduces any puffiness.
The First 5 Days: Protecting the Result
Your goal is to keep the lips from drying out without “drowning” them in ointment.
Use only the aftercare product provided or recommended by your Tattooed artist.
No kissing, hot drinks, or spicy foods for the first 48 hours.
Avoid drinking through a straw for the first day—unnecessary tension in the lip muscles is best avoided.
Tattooed Standard: Aesthetics and Safety.
At Tattooed, we care about both the beauty of your lips and your long-term safety. Our experience shows that proper preparation is 90% of the success.
